Film Premiere | Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

On Monday night Sam and I went to the Premiere of ‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’ in London’s Leicester Square. I hadn’t seen the trailer before so I didn’t know much about the film and I hadn’t heard of the comic books before. But I knew it was sci-fi and set in space with alien life forms. I’ll hold my hands up here – I am a a sci-fi geek. Sam and I love The Fifth Element and Lucy was pretty good too. I had a feeling that ‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets’ by the same Director Luc Besson, would definitely be something I’d enjoy.

Sam and I try not to spend too much time on the ‘red carpet’ so to speak! Its a little daunting with all those people staring at you trying to figure out whether you are famous or not. Also, I’m not usually that dressed up as I’ve just come straight from work. But we couldn’t resist a cheeky snap! 😉 According to Clive Owen we’re allowed a blue ‘red carpet’ because we’re British!

My Thoughts on Valerian:

I really enjoyed watching this film and I haven’t shut up recommending it to anyone that will listen. Being a film editor I figured out who the bad guy was pretty quickly. But I was happy to go on a journey of discovery with Valerian and Laureline and figure out things with them. I knew who the bad guy was but I wanted the who, why, what, where and when. It was pure sci-fi entertainment and I am impressed with Besson’s imagination! The worlds he has created are well, out of this world!

My Favourite Scene:

Definitely the chase! I watched the film in 3D and it felt like I was right there being whipped about in the frenzy of it all. It was so good! My eyes were definitely tricked and I suddenly felt like I was on a rollercoaster and I could feel my stomach start to lurch. But then my brain figured out I was actually sat still so I felt ok again. The whole sequence actually made me feel like I was right there with them.

Cara Delevigne & Rihanna:

I was intrigued when I found out Cara Delevigne and Rihanna were both starring in Valerian. I was a little worried that because they are both so iconic in their industries that it would be distracting watching them. Rihanna is a world famous singer and I just wondered at how much ‘Rihanna’ would be in the character she was playing. It was the same apprehensive feeling with Cara – I was worried that all I would see is those famous eyebrows.

I was both wrong and right.

Rihanna plays a character called Bubble who’s a shape shifter. According to Rihanna herself she is also a kind of shape shifter. As evidenced by her artistry and fashion sense. The role suited Rihanna well as she was kind of playing herself to some extent. But she does put on a heck of a performance! 😉

I completely believed that Cara was Laureline. Luc Besson was singing her praises during his interview. A testimony to her skill and I LOVE a strong female lead. She portrays the fiesty Laureline as a kick-ass female who knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to stick up for herself. So naturally, I felt an affinity with her. Strong smart and sassy. I didn’t think about her eyebrows once other than thinking that they are indeed perfect!

I have read a couple of reviews saying this film has flopped. The Fifth Element flopped when it had its cinematic release but since then has become a cult favourite. Reviews are just opinions at the end of the day. If this film is anything like its predecessors then we can safely say more is yet to come.

Let me know what you think of the film 🙂
